Examining Interconnected Health Inequities Through Global Reporting
The following lesson plans were created and facilitated by 12 educators from around the United States who participated in the Fall 2025 Pulitzer Center Teacher Fellowship program, "Examining Interconnected Health Inequities Through Global Reporting." The Fellows, representing 12 individual states, brought a diversity of perspectives and experiences to this work. The cohort included educators working with students from 5th-12th grade, aligning and incorporating global health reporting into their coursework. Their courses included English, environmental science, journalism, biology, government and politics, Spanish, and French. Click here to learn more about the fellows and the impact of these lessons.
Each lesson is designed to be taught within 1-3 class periods and includes a downloadable lesson plan, teaching materials, evaluation rubrics, tips and reflections from the educator, and examples of work by students who participated in the lessons in fall 2025. These Fellows engaged 1,045 students who explored reporting on pharmaceutical companies dominating the insulin market, the impact of extreme heat on vulnerable delivery workers, and the consequences of withdrawing foreign aid on the health of the most vulnerable populations. As a result of engaging with global health stories, students led issue-focused discussions, designed awareness campaigns and presentations, and wrote reflective essays, op-eds, and documentary poems.
