  • The Kazansky station in Moscow welcomes two trains a week form Tajikistan. They are packed with men and the occasional woman, exhausted after the four-day trip.  For some the ride was a chance at adventure, but for many it was the economical choice.     The train passengers, all Tajiks, most male and under 50, settle into their four-day journey to Moscow. A few hours later, at the Uzbekistan border, an aggressive immigration check interrupts any rest. Uzbek guards roam the train, dismantling everything with screwdrivers, searching compartments, light fittings, handrails, and window frames. They are looking for narcotics or contraband, but this is an unnecessary exercise of power – the train is not even scheduled to stop in the country. The conductors…
