The city of 5 million people is unknown outside China, but it is seeking to escape its national image as one of the worst polluters in China. The city's prosperous chemical factories on the shore of Lake Tai, the third largest freshwater lake in China, have released so much pollution that in 2007, nearly 2 million people here were deprived of cooking and drinking water for a week when a thick layer of green scum formed over the lake.
