Sargassum, the New ‘Caribbean Gold’?: Challenges and Opportunities

Authors:

More than 40 million tons of sargassum annually lands on Caribbean beaches, threatening coastal communities' economies and ecosystems. However, some startups are seeing sargassum as the new "Caribbean gold."

Caribbean countries could establish an entire supply chain to collect, store, and distribute sargassum, but turning the sargassum crisis into gold is not easy.

This project aims to explore inter-Caribbean cooperation to develop a seaweed industry for cosmetic purposes, biogas, bioplastics, fertilizers, and animal feed.
