India has a sprawling gig economy with over 3 million gig workers distributed across cab-hailing, food and grocery delivery, e-commerce, and more. And this number is only growing as more tech companies expand their services; over 400,000 delivery worker jobs are up for grabs in the coming months.
These workers interact with their mobile app on a daily basis to make a living, and any technical glitch on the app without human intervention can have life-changing repercussions. Varsha Bansal's project will be a series of stories on how AI and algorithms impact the lives of gig workers in India.
