HOW IT WORKS
The Global South is home to a large community of AI and tech labor and a time when many emerging AI regulations are being shaped. Without proactive engagement and multistakeholder movement, the risk of AI replicating long-standing patterns of global inequality, injustice, and bias is significant. As communities worldwide are increasingly captivated by the promise of AI, a project that fosters a nuanced perspective of AI is important.
The South to South AI Accountability CoLab is a program that aims to strengthen the connection between AI accountability reporting and civil society engagement, contributing to a more informed governance of AI in the Global South. We do this by 1) creating peer learning among civil society organizations and academia on AI accountability and 2) providing microscale grants to support organizations and academia in AI accountability work.
The S2S AI Accountability CoLab is designed to be collaborative, flexible, and responsive to the needs of civil society, academics, and communities, enabling applicants to design activities that address the gaps and opportunities identified in our "From Hype to Reality" research.

PEER LEARNING CIRCLE
The Pulitzer Center’s AI Accountability Network works with journalists and newsrooms that represent the diversity of the communities affected by AI technologies. Through our peer-learning, we aim to further extend the reach and impact of their investigations.
Alongside our partners, we are conducting a learning circle to strengthen knowledge exchange among civil society and academia to create a multidisciplinary and collaborative ecosystem that addresses challenges and collectively works to find solutions that make AI serve the public interest.
Civil society, academia, and researchers who are operating in Africa, Latin America, and South and Southeast Asia are welcome to join. We are planning to conduct the virtual peer learning session in June-July 2025.
Please indicate your interest by filling out a pre-registration form. We will contact you once we have open applications.

MICROGRANTS
We believe in the power of collective action that inspires changes in perspectives, narratives, and actions, fostering a more informed and empathetic community. We provide microscale support for civil society, university educators, and independent researchers to:
- Use at least one AI Accountability Network story as the central part of a project. Click here for a list of resources.
- Present short-term and long-term project impact to align with the following one or two outcomes:
- Improving understanding of AI's current impact on society
- Ability to connect empirical evidence to emerging technology policies
- Present the AI intersection with one or more of the following issues: human rights (social inclusivity, labor, gender equality), emerging technology governance, and environmental impact.
Registration will open in July 2025. Subscribe to our newsletter to get the latest updates.
