Complex Laws, Social Pressures Limit Abortion Access in India

Country:

Author:

More than one in seven unintended pregnancies globally occur in India. This project will look at the ways in which women seek abortions in India, especially the unsafe, illegal abortions. It will explore how limited access to abortion changes women's health and lives.

Recently, women have been facing resistance from courts and doctors that has also limited abortion access, especially in late-term pregnancies. This project will also look into discrimination in health facilities, courts, and communities.

Access to early abortion in India is often limited because of doctor bias or poor public health conditions. About 78% of abortions in India occur without medical supervision, leading to severe complications and even death. Nearly eight women in India die daily from unsafe abortions.
