What's the Impact of Finding Oil in Your Backyard?



Questions for "Kenya: The People of Turkana County"

Read the slideshow introduction and answer the following:

  1. What are potentially positive impacts of uncovering oil in Turkana County?
  2. What are potentially negative impacts of uncovering oil in Turkana County?
  3. What do you think the author means when he says “theater for oil conflict.” Why do you think he uses the word “theater”

As you browse the slideshow, look for the following: Who does the slideshow present? How are they affected by the discovery of oil?

  1. Make a table that distinguishes the connection between the people presented and the impact of oil on their lives?

Reflection: Answer the following: 

  1. Why do you think the journalist chose to use a slideshow to present this information?
  2. Which slideshow most powerfully presents oil's impact on the people of Turkana County? Why?
  3. How does the slideshow present what the author calls a "theater for conflict?"
  4. Revisit your initial brainstorm of potential impacts of oil drilling on your community. What are other potential impacts on your community?

  2. What are the factors that are making oil harder to drill now?
  3. What resource is needed to extract oil from Turkana? What does the article describe as possible solutions?
  4. How does the author compare drilling now to drilling in Higgins’ time? (hint: Why does he bring up Barack Obama?)
  5. What do you think the author’s purpose for this article is?
  6. How does the author compare and contract oil production now to oil production in the past to make his point?
