In A Retomada (The Revival), the podcast production company Rádio Novelo delves into the struggle of Indigenous people in Brazil to secure fundamental rights that are constantly under dispute.
Through three stories, the series explores three threatened rights: cultural identity, religious freedom, and education.
In “The Return of Goreti Aikewara,” an Aikewara woman abducted by loggers as a child returns to her village as an adult and leads efforts to reopen the community school. However, she faces doubts about her Indigenous identity from her own people.
In “A retomada Puyanawa” (“The Puyanawa Revival”), the central theme is the right to religious freedom, told through the story of the Puyanawa people, whose culture vanished with the arrival of evangelical missionaries. Years later, they organized to reclaim their beliefs and values.
“The Teacher of Jacareacanga” tells the story of a teacher facing challenges while teaching the Munduruku people in the city with the highest incidence of illegal mining in Brazil.
In addition to telling these stories, this project looks into the policies that help safeguard rights and the gaps still to be overcome.
