Our Great Lakes: Awash in Plastic

Author:

Petrochemical conglomerates are moving to dramatically increase the amount of plastics produced in the United States. The Trump administration is not inclined to stop them.

Meanwhile, tiny bits known as microplastics are in human brains and other organs. A growing amount of research links microplastics and even smaller nanoplastics to diseases and other ailments.

In this project, The Chicago Tribune explains how plastics threaten Great Lakes differently than oceans, addresses how research trails funding for studies of ocean pollution, and explains the impact on fisheries.
