In Brazil's 2024 municipal elections, about 60,000 new mandates, including mayors and city councils, will be decided. Within Greater Sao Paulo, 4 municipalities lack sufficient news coverage, and 8 have limited coverage (with only one professional news organization). Despite the challenges of misinformation, we aim to explore how residents in these underserved cities choose their candidates.
We will explore what life is like in a news desert city to produce a multimedia story on information production, consumption, and circulation without the presence of a traditional news organization.
We emphasize the involvement of young people in local politics and civic engagement, highlighting that voting is crucial in democracy, but not the sole form of civic participation.
