Incumbent Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro undermined election results ahead of his defeat in a closely-watched runoff race. Former two-term President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva beat Bolsonaro on October 30, 2022.

With the future of democracy in Brazil and the wider Latin American region at stake, world powers warned all parties to accept the results and not attempt a coup.

Meanwhile, the Brazilian rainforest, a precious weapon against global climate change, is being destroyed at record levels, and Indigenous communities fighting to save it are coming under increasing attacks by vested interest groups and a corrupt political system.

The presidential election in Brazil will massively impact efforts to save the forest and its guardians.
