This project collects stories of female laborers working amid the climate crisis for oil palm plantation companies.
Companies ignore labor rights and do not have standards for women during the climate crisis. Many female workers experience miscarriages, premature births, or other health problems. Also, they are more vulnerable to exposure to toxic chemicals and pesticides.
The climate crisis triggers fires. The women are exposed to months of haze and acute respiratory distress. Companies respond to workers who are easily exhausted and prone to illness at work with threats of unilateral dismissal or increasing work targets.
Female workers have struggled to demand that oil palm plantation companies fulfill the rights of female workers amid the climate crisis. But companies continue to ask them to work in the sweltering heat.
Oil palm companies that employ women in the midst of climate change and ignore their rights are reaping significant profits by exporting palm oil around the world.
