For years, China has subjected Uyghurs and other ethnic minorities to forced labor in the eastern Xinjiang province. Western governments responded by introducing legislation to prevent goods tainted by this practice from accessing their markets.
Using innovative research techniques, a team of reporters investigated whether the use of Chinese forced labor is far more widespread than previously understood and what this means for the global supply of Chinese products. The reporters are also looking into how effective previous actions taken by the U.S. and other governments have been.
This project promises to provide a rigorous, evidence-based picture bringing deep insights into systemic abuses at the heart of China’s economy.
