Gaby Spangenberg
PULITZER CENTER ALUM
Gaby is a rising senior at Sewanee: The University of the South where she is studying Environmental Science and French. She spends her time working as the Head Senior Interviewer for the admissions office and volunteering in exchange for the Bonner service scholarship program.
The Bonner Foundation is a nation-wide organization that provides universities and colleges with the Bonner Program, to encourage a culture of service. The Pulitzer Center is a national partner with the Bonner Foundation, offering students many opportunities such as the summer internship in Washington, D.C. As a Bonner Leader, Gaby volunteers her time at free medical clinics in rural Tennessee.
She created a diabetes self-management program for type II diabetics in the clinic and will teach the course this year. Curious to learn more about public health, she ventured to Geneva, Switzerland in the fall of 2012 to study global health and development. This past March, Gaby traveled to Haiti to help provide medical and dental care in Montrouis, Cange, and Mirebalais. Gaby was the editor-in-chief of an award-winning yearbook at Louise S. McGehee High School in New Orleans. She now hopes to combine her interests of environmental studies, health, and journalism this summer and bring to light many stories she has heard and witnessed from her experiences abroad in furtherance of the Pulitzer mission. After graduation she would like to obtain a master's degree in public health.
