In this environmental reporting session, journalists explore the disproportionate impact of climate change and environmental degradation on African American communities, sharing reporting strategies and grant-seeking tips for ambitious projects.

NABJ convention attendees are invited to attend a discussion with Pulitzer Center grantees about environmental storytelling. The free, in-person event will be held Thursday, August 1, 3-4pm CDT.

Moderator and Pulitzer Center staff member Jazmyn Gray will be joined by journalists Halle Parker, Tony Bartleme, and Nitashia Johnson. Read more about them below.

Our panelists:

  • Halle Parker reports on the environment for WWNO's Coastal Desk. Before coming to New Orleans Public Radio, she covered Louisiana's environment for the Times-Picayune/New Orleans Advocate and down the bayou for the Houma Courier. She also worked for the National Audubon Society. Some of Parker's past reporting has centered on environmental justice issues and Louisiana's coastal land loss crisis. Her recent Pulitzer Center reporting covers the construction of a massive Liquid Natural Gas infrastructure, which will have significant environmental implications along the vulnerable Lousiana Gulf Coast.
  • Tony Bartelme, author and senior projects reporter at The Post and Courier, has produced several award-winning environmental reporting projects around the globe. For his team's work investigating water levels in Charleston, South Carolina, he was named a Pulitzer Prize finalist for the fourth time in 2020. Other national honors come from the Nieman, Scripps, Loeb, and National Press foundations. For his most recent Pulitzer Center project, The Saharan Connection and Lessons from Senegal, Bartelme documented how Saharan dust affects tropical storms and Charleston, South Carolina.
  • Nitashia Johnson is a multimedia artist, journalist, and educator from Dallas, Texas. Her freelance photography and videography appeared in outlets such as The New York Times, The Dallas Morning News, NBC, The Washington Post, and CNN. Johnson’s Pulitzer Center project, The Faces That Face, delves into the stories of seven individuals, including herself, who resided near the Dallas GAF roofing manufacturing facility, and its environmental implications.
