Exploring Past Public Health Emergencies Around the World

1. Warm Up: Students review the following vocabulary words: headline, news outlet, journalist, public health, infectious disease, epidemic

2. Summarizing and Analyzing News Articles on Past Public Health Emergencies: 

  • Students select one or more of the 12 news articles in the body of this lesson to read. The articles are printable in PDF and doc formats.
  • Using a printable or fillable PDF worksheet (pages 1-4), students track details from news articles about past public health emergencies. Here is the worksheet in Microsoft Word.
  •  Students use details from the news articles for writing and research activities about public health emergencies past and present. (pages 5-6 of the worksheet above). 

3. Extension: Here, find a list of journalists who may be available to speak with your class virtually about their reporting on public health emergencies and build on what they students learned as part of this lesson.
