Jeanne Carstensen reports from the Turkish coastal city of Izmir where she encounters refugees from Syria trying to reach the sanctuary of Europe via the Greek island of Lesbos.

Some find smugglers to take them across. Others are uncertain about how to proceed, especially if they do not have money to pay the smugglers. Carstensen speaks with Carol Hills, host of PRI's The World, about the people risking their lives in the hope of finding a better one.
