Much of the world’s medicines come from India, so much so that it's known as the world’s pharmacy. Many of these medicines are safe and effective. However, recent high-profile scandals have led to tragic deaths and raised serious concerns about drug quality for a range of products, from cough medicines to chemotherapy drugs. Critics say that regulators don't adequately hold manufacturers accountable and that companies are allowed to operate with minimal oversight. So the scale of the problem is not fully understood.
In this project, TBIJ and its reporting partners will shine a light on the weaknesses in safety nets that are letting bad medicines reach sick patients, tracing accountability from hospital harm back through the supply chain.
