Unequal Shores: Following Climate Dollars in Senegal

Country:

Author:

This reporting project explores the complex interplay of climate finance, energy development, and social equity in Senegal, a microcosm of the global tension between the Global North and South on climate justice. This project delves into how countries like Senegal, which have contributed minimally to global warming, are disproportionately burdened with its consequences. While wealthy nations pledge climate financing, much of the funding benefits projects like luxury resorts classified as "green" rather than address the urgent needs of climate-vulnerable communities.

Through in-depth storytelling, this project highlights the perspectives of subsistence fishing communities along Senegal's coast, who are grappling with rising sea levels and eroding livelihoods. It also explores the challenges and aspirations surrounding Senegal's emerging fossil fuel industry, and the fishermen who feel left behind. Partly due to global climate goals, financing for domestic energy expansion has been limited, reflecting the broader inequities in global climate policies.

This project aims to illuminate the trade-offs and ethical dilemmas at the heart of climate action in developing nations. The reporting seeks to foster a nuanced understanding of how climate policies affect real lives and provoke thoughtful discussions about achieving equitable solutions in the global fight against climate change.
