Spillage at Sea: The Human Toll of Oil Spills Along India's Coast

India’s coastline stretches over 4,671 miles, serving as a bustling hub for trade with exports valued at $422 billion and imports totaling $613 billion flowing through its 13 major ports. Amidst this flurry of economic activity lies a darker reality: a recurrent tale of oil spills devastating marine ecosystems and leaving coastal communities year after year, in distress.

Oil spills from ports and refineries have severe and lasting impacts. The permanent alteration of shorelines and the loss of crucial habitats like mangroves, seagrass beds, estuaries disrupt ecosystems, leading to increased mortality and decreased productivity of commercially valuable fish. However, the spillages come at a deeply social cost of peripheralising the already vulnerable- compounding their economic and ecological isolation.

In this journey along India’s coast, we investigate the intertwined lives of coastal communities and the formidable challenges they face in the wake of environmental disasters such as oil spills. Through a blend of poignant narratives, investigative journalism, and data-driven analysis, we aim to illuminate the enduring struggles, resilience, and hopes of those whose lives are intimately tied to the sea. These series of stories is an attempt to trace how these recurrent disasters are interspersed in the coastal lives, and how the aftermath of the spillage is a generational burden on each of their young and old shoulders.

We want to glimpse the indomitable spirit of the communities as they navigate an uncertain future while clinging fiercely to their ancestral ties to the sea; and bring their stories to the fore.
