'Rio 60ºC': How Rio de Janeiro Prepares for Extreme Climate Events

Country:

Author:

Rio de Janeiro is already experiencing the effects of rising global temperature. Meteorologists point out that extreme rainfall events are becoming more intense and frequent—and the trend is expected to worsen. In response, the Rio 60ºC project addresses the need to mitigate the impacts of these extreme events in the city, where about 475,000 people live in areas at risk of flooding or landslides.

The project highlights the communities at greatest risk through a rain vulnerability index presented in a series of interactive maps, developed in partnership with the research group RioNowcast+Green.

An infographic with realistic illustrations offers practical recommendations to prepare the city for these storms, including early warning systems, basic infrastructure, and urban planning techniques adapted to climate change.

Stories produced in partnership with local journalists show how the lack of preparedness for heavy rains is affecting workers' daily lives and the gaps in disaster risk reduction ignored by government officials.
