Trauma After a Climate Disaster

Country:

Author:

In 2024, unprecedented floods devastated southern Brazil, displacing hundreds of thousands and impacting millions in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. While many have returned home after the waters receded, some remain in shelters, particularly in cities where entire neighborhoods were wiped out.

As people adapt to a changed landscape, cope with material losses, and mourn loved ones, health professionals are working to prevent a looming mental health crisis. A survey conducted shortly after the floods revealed that nine out of 10 residents were experiencing anxiety—an expected consequence given the scale of the disaster. However, emerging research suggests that community support can play a crucial role in building resilience and aiding recovery.

This project tells the story of those navigating profound loss, the health workers offering critical support, and the researchers investigating trauma and resilience in the wake of a climate disaster.

Such catastrophes are becoming more frequent and lessons from Brazil may help inform preparedness and response to similar events around the world.
