Pregnant and Disabled in Malawi

Country:

Authors:

After a miscarriage, nurses in the gynecologic ward at a Malawian hospital mobilized themselves to confront the husband for impregnating a disabled woman.

“They wanted to ask him why he impregnated a disabled woman and blamed him for my miscarriage. Yet the miscarriage was due to normal biological reasons which even women without disabilities would also experience,” recalls Lynes, stating that because she is educated, she was able to stop the health workers’ plan.

Malawi’s 2018 Population and Housing Census estimates that there are 1,734,250 people with disabilities in Malawi, representing about 11.6 percent of the total population.

This project investigates and brings to the fore the untold discriminatory and unequal experiences of disabled women in accessing maternal care in Malawi.
