As artificial intelligence fuels explosive growth in data centers, Tennessee is quietly becoming one of the industry's newest frontiers. From Memphis to Nashville and rural communities across the state, massive facilities are being proposed, approved, and built to meet rising demand for cloud computing, AI and cryptocurrency operations.

This project examines how that growth is transforming Tennessee's landscape and whether public oversight is keeping pace. The reporting explores the environmental footprint of data centers, including their energy demands, backup diesel generators, land use, and potential impacts on nearby communities. It also investigates the role of regulators, utilities, elected officials, and economic development agencies in facilitating the industry's expansion.

While data centers are often promoted as engines of economic growth, many projects move forward with limited public awareness and little understanding of their long-term consequences. Through records, data analysis and on-the-ground reporting, this investigation will reveal where Tennessee's data center boom is unfolding, who stands to benefit and who may bear the costs. Ultimately, the project asks whether communities are being given a meaningful voice as one of the state's largest emerging industries reshapes their future.
