Incommunicado: Inside EU Migration Detention

Country:

Author:

In 2021, Lithuania, a member of the European Union, began detaining asylum seekers in closed camps. Inside the camps, asylum seekers experienced widespread abuse.

Sajjad, an Iraqi asylum seeker who kept a diary of his detention, is now suing Lithuania in the European Court of Human Rights. At the same time, the EU is rolling out a new migration policy that strips away asylum protections; soon, EU countries will be allowed to indefinitely detain asylum seekers in a "crisis."

A longform story, based on extensive interviews, photos, and video captured inside Lithuania’s camps, takes us into Sajjad’s 11 months in detention, offering a glimpse at the future of asylum in Europe.
