Forest Plantations on the Rise. What's the Deal?

Country:

Author:

Yao-Hua Law's project investigates the sustainability of forest plantations in Malaysia and Southeast Asia, where commercial farms of fast-growing trees are quickly expanding. Such plantations have been promoted as a win-win solution for development and conservation: producing timber and revenue while conserving natural forests from being logged. But has this premise been vigorously tested in Southeast Asia? What are the political power dynamics driving forest use in the region?
