'Cidade de Lama' ('City of Lama')

Country:

Author:

Ilha Grande, in Piauí, Brazil, is the largest island in the Parnaíba Delta, an archipelago protected by Brazilian law, with more than 80 islands, dunes, and mangroves.

There, the fate of the mangrove crab catchers seems to be oblivion, unless something changes. The preservation of the delta is entangled with the very existence of the traditional community from this forgotten village.

Through the story of 80-year-old Antônio Júlio Marques Araújo, Cidade de Lama, a six-episode narrative podcast, investigates the relationship between a community of mangrove crab catchers and the nature around them. What do Ilha Grande and the traditional people of the Parnaíba Delta teach us about environmental preservation, labor exploitation, and the way Brazil looks at its people and its natural reserves?
