Murat Yazar

GRANTEE

Murat Yazar is a Kurdish photographer from Eastern Turkey. In 2006, he worked with Turkey's leading photographers at Fototrek Photography Center in Istanbul. He has been working as a freelance photographer since 2008.

Yazar has created photo projects in his home country, the Middle East, Armenia, Georgia, Iran, and Europe. He crossed Anatolia into Georgia while walking 1,200 kilometers (745 miles) as part of the Out of Eden Walk project.

Yazar's work has been published in National Geographic, Now magazine (Canada), IZ Magazine (Turkey), Le Courrier (Switzerland), The New York Times, Artribune magazine (Italy), Travel Globe Magazine (Italy), and Saiten magazine (Switzerland).

Published works also include the book Shadows of Kurdistan: A Photographic Research of a Cultural identity.

Yazar's grants and awards include the Grand Prize in the Banff Mountain Photo Essay Competition in 2020, being a 2022 finalist for the W. Eugene Smith Memorial Grant, among many others. ​
