Maia Booker

OUTREACH AND PRODUCTION INTERN

Maia joined the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting in January 2010. Prior to this, she interned at Voice of America radio's French-to-Africa service, broadcast in Central and West Africa. Maia has also worked as a photo editor for Discovery Communications, and has interned at the Agence France Presse, as well as for Amnesty International's Africa Advocacy Department, and the Centre for the Study of Terrorism and Political Violence in St Andrews, where her focus was Southern Iraq. Maia holds a M.A in Arabic and Middle East Studies from the University of St Andrews in Scotland. She also spent a year in Cairo studying Arabic, Gender Issues, political Islamic thought and Egyptology. While in Cairo, she did field work to study the impact of various development programs geared toward the empowerment of women in a poor Cairene urban setting, whether through micro-credit schemes, or politically connecting women to state institutions, with the goal to allow them to actively participate in changing their social and political landscape. She is now focusing on Haiti, and women and children in crisis.
