Howard W. French

GRANTEE

Howard French was a foreign correspondent and senior writer for The New York Times for over two decades, working in Central America and the Caribbean, West and Central Africa, Japan and Korea, and China.

Since 2008 he has been an associate professor at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. During this time he has been a frequent freelance contributor to The Guardian, The Atlantic, The Wall Street Journal and The New York Review of Books.

He is the author of four books, "A Continent for the Taking: The Tragedy and Hope of Africa"; "Disappearing Shanghai: Photographs and Poems of an Intimate Way of Life"; "China's Second Continent: How a Million Migrants are Building a New Empire in Africa" and the March 2017 "Everything Under the Heavens: How the Past Helps Explain China's Push for Global Power."
