Gideon Sarpong, a 2023 Ocean Reporting Fellow, will be a featured speaker during the University of Richmond’s Center for Global Engagement’s Ghana Week on November 18-20, 2025.
On Tuesday, November 18, Sarpong will virtually visit with students enrolled in the course Journalism 222. On Thursday, November 20, Sarpong will visit another Journalism 222 class, and deliver a talk on reporting on climate change in Ghana.
Sarpong's Pulitzer Center-supported reporting projects include Climate Change and the Devastating Impact on Fishers and Women in West Africa (Ghana and Nigeria); A Decade of SOCFIN's Refusal To Resolve Social, Environmental, and Land Problems in Cameroon; and Empty Nets: Unveiling the Dark Reality Behind Ghana's "People's Fish" Collapse.
Sarpong is a journalist with a decade of experience in policy, data, and investigative journalism. He is a co-founder of data journalism nonprofit iWatch Africa and he is the Ghana Hub lead of the Sustainable Ocean Alliance.
In addition, Sarpong is an alumnus of the Young African Leaders Initiative, the Thomson Reuters Foundation, and the Bloomberg Data for Health Initiative. He was a 2021 policy leader fellow at the European University Institute in Florence, Italy, and a 2022 Reuters fellow at the University of Oxford. He has won several journalism awards and was selected by the Thomson Reuters Foundation as a 2022 Changemaker.
