Authoritarianism on the March in Eastern Europe

Penulis:

The communist period in Eastern Europe is long over, but authoritarianism appears to be making a comeback. In Belarus, a sweeping crackdown on the opposition has sent thousands to prison and many more fleeing its borders. Some of those refugees have ended up in Lithuania and Poland, trying to make a new life for themselves. EU member Poland faces its own difficulties with backsliding on the union's democratic norms. Human rights campaigners warn LGBTQ rights are being stripped away while the courts are losing their independence. PBS NewsHour Weekend Special Correspondent Simon Ostrovsky visits to report on the troubling political trends there.

In Belarus and Poland, authoritarianism is on the rise. Ostrovsky reports on a brutal crackdown in Belarus and backsliding on democracy in Poland.
