Paid Opportunity for Chicago Educators: Stories of Youth-Led Advocacy

• How can we see ourselves and our students in global stories of student resistance and advocacy?
• How can reporting about global student activism and community engagement be revitalizing for ourselves and our communities?

During this paid, discussion-based event, educators will read and discuss Pulitzer Center-supported reporting about young people engaged in activism and community work around the world. Participants will explore how shifts in political, cultural, and socioeconomic structures have galvanized youth voice and civil participation, centering individual and community values and interconnection.

This event is a reflective space for educators to connect with one another as the school year comes to a close. We hope to cultivate educator curiosity about global reporting that can support student learning. Participants will discover how news stories can be a powerful tool for reflection, connection, and interpersonal understanding. Educators will engage as learners, making both personal and community connections to the following Pulitzer Center-supported stories and projects about global youth activism:

• Reframing Public Safety in Puerto Rico, by Isabelle Senechal for Nueve Millones
• The Fire This Time: Documenting Pro-Palestinian Student Protests in NYC, by Marcos Quinones
• The Climate Generation: Born Into Crisis, Building Solutions, by Stephanie Haines for The Christian Monitor

CPS Bridgeport Administrative Office, 501 W. 35th Street-Social Science Department

Who's eligible to attend?

Eligible participants include classroom teachers, administrators, and content specialists supporting Chicago public and public charter schools, out-of-school-time program staff and administrators, and educators supporting programming for youth in carceral facilities.

Registration

This event is designed for up to 20 educators. Educators are required to register for the session and will be admitted on a rolling basis. Register here.

The Pulitzer Center will hold up to 10 additional educators on a wait list. Wait-listed educators will be notified two to three days prior to the event if there is space available due to cancellations from earlier attendees.

Stipend

Each participating educator will receive a $50 stipend for attending, engaging, and completing a post-event survey.
