Pulitzer Center Announces 2024 Impact Seed Fund Grantees

Authors:

The Pulitzer Center is excited to announce the 24 grantees of the Impact Seed Fund (ISF). Launched in 2022, the ISF is a micro-scale grant that supports educators and researchers in engaging students and communities with educational activities on critical issues such as deforestation, ocean biodiversity, climate change and labor rights, and artificial intelligence accountability.

These projects will use Pulitzer Center-supported journalism to engage university students, educators, and communities in Brazil, Cambodia, Cameroon, Costa Rica, Democratic Republic of the Congo, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mozambique, Nigeria, United Kingdom, Uruguay, and Vietnam. The initiatives include strengthening worker protection in the supply chain, facilitating Indigenous knowledge exchange in forest conservation, addressing community vulnerability and collective trauma due to territorial issues, and using open data to improve climate-resilient city planning.

Each project incorporates Pulitzer Center-supported reporting to enhance active citizenship, awareness and critical thinking, better equip students and educators with information to take action, and foster a more informed and transparent dialogue between academia, communities, and decision-makers on pressing issues.

Since ISF’s inception, the Pulitzer Center has awarded 41 ISF micro-grants, starting in Southeast Asia, and expanding to South Asia, Africa, and Latin America. These grants have supported the creation of innovative teaching and learning materials inspired by journalism stories. Through the ISF, we are attempting to build a global community of learners and educators passionate about fostering a deeper understanding of critical issues and exploring how education communities can address challenges revealed by Pulitzer Center journalists.

"These ISF projects are where journalism meets education, creating spaces for educators, students, and communities to question the world around them and explore what we can do about it, together. By integrating Pulitzer Center-supported journalism into these initiatives, we’re sparking the critical thinking needed to drive informed action," said Intan Febriani, International Education and Outreach director.

The ISF grantees will implement educational projects from August through December 2024. The grantees were selected from 309 applicants across 13 countries. Through the ISF and other engagement initiatives, the Pulitzer Center continues to champion journalism for informed and impactful action.

“These educators are valued partners in sharing Pulitzer Center-funded reporting with communities eager for facts about climate change and the environment and how workers are directly affected by climate risks. Their enthusiasm for fact-based journalism as a trusted classroom resource is gratifying,” said Christine Spolar, the Pulitzer Center's climate editor.
