On October 29, journalist Brittany Gibson led a webinar for 83 students and teachers on voter suppression and disenfranchisement in the 2020 U.S. elections, and how people are fighting against it. The webinar began with a presentation by Gibson on how she became a journalist, what led her to report on voter suppression, and the historical and present-day struggles that U.S. citizens have faced to make sure their votes count. This was followed by a Q&A session where she answered some of the questions asked by the audience.

Gibson is a British-Ameican journalist and a Writing Fellow at The American Prospect in Washington, D.C. Her work covers varying themes and beats, but all her stories originate from an innate sense of curiosity about how the world works and a desire to share people's stories.

This on-demand webinar offers great insight into how and why the 2020 U.S. election turned from an election day to an election week, and what can happen when people are empowered to make an impact with their own vote. In the process, students will learn about how journalists investigate and communicate crucial under-reported stories.

If you would like to prepare for this webinar, this lesson plan  outlines the meaning and history of voter suppression and its current reality.
