Although Ecuador's prisons are populated mainly by men, the women in their lives play a fundamental role. In addition to being the ones who sustain prison life with their productive and care work, they are the ones who seek justice in a system that has not only denied rehabilitation to their loved ones, but has subjected them to the most extreme violence.

Despite regulations and public policies, there is no real and tangible strategy to ensure the welfare of the mental health of female prisoners in Ecuador. They spend their days in their cells, without specialized care and without the facilities that would allow them to obtain the medications that could help them overcome the trauma of confinement.

In August 2023, Alexa, a trans migrant woman, was taken to the most dangerous prison in Ecuador without a sentence. There, like many trans women, she lived a sentence against her rights and against her identity.
