Education in Quito has come a long way in the past decade. With a new constitution in 2008, the government reaffirmed its dedication to education. Still, the discrepancies between a poor, rural private school and a private school in the city are numerous—and in some schools teachers have only a high school diploma. Yet despite adversity in their lives both at home and in school, many high school students have a strong desire to attend university. At La Escuela Nuevos Horizontes del Sur teachers try to ensure that children have a chance to succeed.
