The Wide Mesh: Europe’s Blind Spot in Global Seafood Sourcing

Authors:

EU countries consume roughly twice as much as they produce, making European people heavily dependent by imports from non-EU fishing fleets. Although EU regulations are officially designed to prevent and combat illegal, unregulated and undocumented fish trade, there are still many ways to fool controls.

This reporting project focuses on the different legal loopholes and laundering practices through which illegally sourced fish is entering important EU markets, losing traces of its origins.
