Telegram Trap: Inside the Hidden Networks Exploiting Children and Families in Egypt

Country:

Author:

This investigation reveals a growing yet largely underreported digital exploitation network operating on Telegram, where loosely organized groups of young administrators recruit children and teenagers into cycles of abuse.

Over several months, the investigation identifies multiple Arabic-language Telegram channels and groups in which minors are lured through curiosity, peer pressure, or small financial incentives to share personal or family images. These materials are then weaponized: Victims are coerced and blackmailed into producing increasingly explicit content, not only of themselves but also involving female family members such as mothers and sisters. The content is subsequently circulated within private groups, generating profit through paid subscriptions and expanding audiences.

This project combines direct observation, documented victim testimonies, and digital evidence mapping in order to uncover how these networks function, scale, and evade detection. It also examines the gaps in platform moderation and the challenges of legal accountability across the Middle East and North Africa.

This story exposes a systemic form of exploitation that affects vulnerable families, largely hidden within encrypted digital spaces. It also highlights the difficulties authorities face in tracking and prosecuting those responsible.
