Catholic missionaries were the first non-native persons to arrive at the Amazon rainforest alongside the conquistadors. Five centuries later, they are gathering to try and regain influence in those areas. In the depths of the Amazon, a Catholic nun confronts a reality with few priests, a wave of evangelical preachers—and deforestation. Meanwhile in Rome, the Pope holds a special Synod on the region.
