In this project, Votebeat Texas reporter Natalia Contreras explores systemic failures that have prevented some eligible Texans from successfully registering to vote. This initiative was born out of a pressing need to address and rectify issues within the voter registration process that risk leaving many, including Contreras, unregistered despite their efforts to sign up.
This project is not about ineligibility but rather about system malfunctions that have impeded the democratic rights of numerous citizens. This investigation includes an analysis of both data and the experiences of some disenfranchised voters, identifying where and why the registration system broke down.
Through targeted research and compelling storytelling, this story aims to raise public awareness and drive advocacy and policy-making for necessary reforms in the voter registration system.
