How Vietnam Can Smartly Plant 1 Billion Trees

Country:

Author:

Vietnam's forests remain among the most unique in the world, but they have been degraded by deforestation, urbanization, hydropower development and other threats. A string of deadly landslides in central provinces late last year brought forest health into the spotlight, and Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has called for 1 billion trees to be planted in the next five years.

Reforestation is not a new concept in Vietnam, but successes in this field have been limited, and in some cases, reforestation programs have been destructive. This project will explore how Vietnam can effectively go about reforesting degraded areas in order to better protect communities living near them, while also rebuilding ecosystems for the country's biodiversity.
