In 2024, journalist Christopher de Bellaigue traveled to São Paulo, Brazil, where he followed the municipal elections of the most populous city in the Southern Hemisphere. He followed candidates on the right and the left and explored the issues of poverty, crime, environmental catastrophe, and corruption, which were central in the campaign.
By taking an in-depth look at São Paulo and its surrounding rural areas, which are controlled by Brazil's powerful farming interest, de Bellaigue hoped to identity the personalities and flashpoints that are expected to dominate Brazilian society as President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva comes to the end of his political life and former President Jair Bolsonaro is superseded by a new generation from the radical right.
