This project offers a deeply personal perspective on war, displacement, and resilience. For this project, photojournalist Mohammed Zaanoun, who has spent 20 years documenting life in Gaza, shifts the focus inward—toward his own experience as a refugee.
Forced to flee Gaza with his family, Zaanoun is now one of 150,000 Palestinian refugees in Cairo, where Gazans are denied legal status and integration. In exile, he discovered the severe physical and psychological toll of war on his children—issues that remained undiagnosed until their arrival in Egypt.
Through photography and storytelling, this project sheds light on the overlooked struggles of Palestinian refugees in Egypt. It also explores the long-term effects of war and forced displacement, contributing to a broader conversation on trauma, mental health, and resilience in conflict zones. At a time when political shifts threaten to reshape the future of Palestinian refugees, this work provides an urgent, human-centered perspective on an unfolding crisis.
