Since Senate Bill 8—the controversial law known as the Texas Heartbeat Act, which effectively outlaws abortion in the state after six weeks—took effect last year, Texas women seeking to terminate pregnancies have had to travel outside the state, and south of the border.
In this project, reporters visit Matamoros and Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, to talk to pharmacies that provide abortion medication and go to clinics in Mexico City that are serving Texas women seeking abortions.
