Colombian Forests Under Pressure

Country:

Author:

As Colombia strives to become a peaceful society in the wake of its landmark 2016 peace agreement, it is forced to grapple with the fact that the deforestation of its tropical forests, as well as violence against environmental defenders, has been surging.

Andrés Bermúdez Liévano's work combines an analysis of large datasets with on-the-ground reporting to probe whether solutions like carbon offset projects, which were devised to counter problems like deforestation of tropical forests and greenhouse gas emissions, are operating correctly in Colombia. It will also focus on illuminating the roles of international actors in tragedies often seen as local, such as violence against environmental defenders or land use changes in the Amazon.
