Catching the 'Big Fish' Destroying Colombia’s Amazon

Country:

Author:

In Colombia, authorities have mostly focused on the small-scale actors behind illegal deforestation, which in actuality is mainly driven by big industries such as cattle ranching, coca leaf cultivation, mining, and logging.

César Molinares’ project aims to investigate the role played by the "big fish" behind the deforestation of the Colombian Amazon, and analyze the way these supply chains benefit from the indiscriminate felling of forests for extensive cattle ranching.

His reports are based on data obtained through a Freedom of Information request that shows movement of livestock in comparison to hot spots of deforestation.
