A three-part, multimedia series from The Sacramento Bee and The Modesto Bee, and published across all McClatchy properties in California, examines the rise of far-right and religious extremism in local communities.
The project examines a little-known but growing church headquartered in the foothill near Sacramento that preaches a racist, whites-only gospel. The series also examines the rise and influence of extremist activists who have turned their attention to local governments, causing havoc as they attempt to seek higher office and influence public policy. And the project also looks at the influence of women in extremist groups as they rise to power throughout fringe groups in Northern California.
