Governments have a bad track record of disclosing the automated systems they use and the ways those systems impact their citizens lives. This is an effort to make a database and website that helps people better understand what AI or automated systems are in use in their area.
No law today requires such disclosure, so a single, searchable repository can improve accountability for governments by citizens, journalists, researchers, and lawmakers. Finding out which automated systems are in use will be a tandem effort of ongoing accountability reporting and public records requests with CalMatters College Journalism Network and graduate students at University of California, Berkeley.
